KIPVA History

The Kentucky Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America received its charter in 1966 under the name of Wheelchair Colonels……..

Highlights:

1970’s   
  • Testified before AFL CIO’s convention in 1970 seeking labor’s support of legislation concerning voting by absentee ballot for the severely handicapped.
  • Incorporate in the state of Indiana and changed name to Kentucky-Indiana Paralyzed Veterans of America. 


1980’s
  • Held the first meeting in the new home at 1030 Goss Ave.
  • Worked with Jefferson County Department for the Handicapped designing accessible play areas for handicapped children.


1990’s
  • We were invited to inspect the new handicapped seating facilities at the Indianapolis 500 Speedway.
  • We took up residence in our new 4,600 sq. ft. headquarters.


2000’s
  • Groundbreaking ceremony for the new Spinal Cord Injury Clinic at the Louisville VAMC. 
  • Received the Outstanding Chapter Award from National PVA and Vice Pres. Richard Simers received the Dwain Taylor Award for his voluntary hours in FY 2003.
